"THE EIGHT WONDER OF THE NATURAL WORLD"
It is impossible to give a fair description of the size and beauty of the crater, for there is nothing with which one can compare it. It is one of the Wonders of the World, wrote the late Professor Bernhard Gizimek when referring to Ngorongoro. And truly, a wonder it is. The Ngorongoro Crater standing at 2,286 meters above sea level is the largest unbroken Caldera in the world. Surrounded by very steep walls rising 610 members across in diameter and has an area of 259 sq. kms. On the floor of this Garden of Eden, which can be reached by a 4WD vehicle roam, hundreds of thousands of plan animals. Elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeess, gazelle, rhino, velvet monkey and the every hungry predators, including cheetah, hyenas and the black manned lion can be observed at close quarters in their natural habitats. More than a hundred species of birds not found in the Serengeti have been spotted here. Ostriches, kori bustards, secretary birds, created cranes egrets, red killed ox-packers and the countless flamingos which form a pink cover the soda lake can be observed. Ngorongoro Crater is about 190 kms from Arusha. 60 kms from Lake Manyara and 145 kms from Serengeti. Very comfortable accommodation facilities are available in Ngorongoro Crate Lodge, Ngorongoro wildlife Lodge, Sopa Lodge and Serena Lodge. |
